Not only does Thump have two cafes in the heart of downtown but they also have their roastery right within the town as well. Here, they are always striving to create unique blends that inspire adventure and invite you to experience your coffee from the first sip to the last drop.

If you prefer to enjoy your morning coffee from the comfort of your own home, Thump sells their beans online as well. Take home their unique North Fork blend or one of their seasonal offerings like one of their Ethiopian or Colombian coffees. They even have their decaf Tiddly Winks blend available; after all, who says coffee can only be enjoyed in the morning?

Backporch Coffee Roasters

What started as a small family-owned business run by a husband and wife team in Bend, Oregon has expanded to provide coffee to some of the biggest cities in the Pacific Northwest, including Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver.

However, the Backporch Coffee Roasters local coffee shops – found on SW Century Drive and NW Newport Avenue – don’t give off the same big business vibe that you would find in a Starbucks. You can still expect the cozy feel of a small-town business.

Here you can plan a nice and relaxing visit to meet with friends, read a good book, or catch up on your work. Grab a seat on the comfy indoor couches or breathe in the fresh mountain air outside at the shaded picnic tables. Either way, you will want to try one of their legendary iced coffees or cold brews during your stay.

The Sparrow Bakery

Since opening its doors in 2006, the Sparrow Bakery has become famous for its unique Ocean Roll, a delicate and flaky breakfast Danish flavored with cardamom and vanilla. But the Sparrow Bakery is not only a popular bakery and brunch spot; they also have great coffee.

At the café, they offer a full coffee bar complete with French press coffee from Stumptown, Lone Pine, and Backporch Roasters as well as a variety of specialty drinks. Of course, you can find traditional cappuccinos, lattes, and macchiatos, but they also offer a signature cardamom latte.

If you’re in Bend for Christmas or simply want to try something a bit different from the usual latte, you have to give their eggnog latte a try. Just like everything else at the Sparrow Bakery, their eggnog is house made and flavored with cardamom, the perfect pair with an Ocean Roll. Their homemade hot chocolate is also a great choice.

Strictly Organic Coffee Co.

The Strictly Organic Coffee Co. has lived by the philosophy of “a sustainable cup” since they first opened in 1999. They aim to live and do business in a way that positively affects the health of their customers as well as the planet as a whole.

The coffee they use in their shops, including their Old Mill coffee bar, is 100% certified USDA organic and fair trade certified through Transfair USA. They also aim to use reusable and biodegradable cups, utensils, and to-go containers to cut down on litter and waste.

Both their Bond Street and Old Mill locations offer a cozy spot to relax where you can enjoy free Wi-Fi and bottomless drip coffee. You can also find a selection of pastries from other local bakeries including Big O Bagels and the Sparrow Bakery.

Dudley’s Bookshop Cafe

Who doesn’t love a good book store and café combo? During my college days, I practically lived at our local book store, and to this day, I still love to spend a good couple of hours at a local bookshop – like Dudley’s – browsing, reading, and enjoying a cup of coffee.

Unlike some other coffee shops that are severely overpriced, Dudley’s offers a nice selection of Americanos, lattes, and cappuccinos at a decent price. You don’t need to worry about being cheated out of your caffeine kick; each size, including their small 8-ounce cup, comes with a double shot of espresso.

Dudley’s also offers a variety of milk choices if you are looking for something dairy-free. Swap out any dairy-based drink with macadamia, soy, hemp, or almond milk.

Of course, Dudley’s is first and foremost a book store. You can find new hardcovers in a variety of genres for 20% off every day as well as some classics, history, and poetry. And since it’s Oregon, they have the best selection of trail and field guides to plan your next adventure.

Spoken Moto

Driven by a deep passion for vintage motorcycles, hand-roasted coffee, and craft beer, Spoken Moto was born. Headquartered in what was once an old mechanic’s shop known as the “pine Shed,” you can still find the parking area filled with motorcycles anytime you visit.

A visit to Spoken Moto is quite the experience. You can browse their collection of vintage motorcycles as well as unique builds. You will also find food trucks like Scoutpost who offer great breakfast choices – their breakfast burrito is fantastic – to pair with a cup of coffee.

Spoken Moto coffee, which is actually provided by Megaphone Coffee. In the mood for something cold? Their nitro cold brew is a must try. Or you can pair a few of their delicious donut holes with a perfect hot mocha. There’s something for everyone at Spoken Moto.

Megaphone Coffee Co.

Speaking of Megaphone Coffee, you will want to give their main shop a visit while you are in Bend. Known for great service and dark roasted strong coffee, you won’t be disappointed.

If you can’t make it to their home location but you want to give their coffee a try, you can find their goods offered at a few other coffee shops and bakeries around Bend. Check out Spoken Moto or Companion Coffeehouse as well as Foxtail and Bad Wolf bakeries.

While they had to close up shop in early 2018, they will be opening a highly anticipated new location on Galveston in Spring 2019, which will hopefully be a bit bigger than their last shop. In the meantime, you can still purchase their beans wholesale or visit one of the other locations that sell their coffee.

Looney Bean Roasting Co.

Don’t let the goofy name fool you; the Looney Bean Roasting Co. is serious about serving some of the best and freshest coffee available in Bend.

Here you will find that their beans are always roasted on site, so you know that your coffee will always taste fresh. Choose from a variety of hot and cold drinks, including the Dirty Hippie – a fun take on the dirty chai – with homemade whipped cream.

The dining experience here – whether that’s just a cup of coffee with a good book or a bit of breakfast – is definitely worth noting. This coffee shop is located in an old repurposed cottage, so you can retreat to one of a few rooms if you want to try to escape the crowd.

On warmer days, you can enjoy your stay in the great outdoors right next to the Deschutes River. Get there early to grab an Adirondack chair near the water or plan for a picnic in the grass or at one of the picnic tables while enjoying a game of cornhole or a game of fetch with your pooch.

Lone Pine Coffee Roasters

Lone Pine is still relatively new having opened in 2009, but they have created quite a reputation for themselves in Downtown Bend. They are driven by quality and community, striving to create a great cup of coffee to share with their customers, who will soon become their friends and regulars.

Located in a little alley, this is a cozy little spot to grab a cup of joe. When you walk in, you are greeted by friendly smiles and the smell of fresh waffles and coffee. There are a few tables available and a couch in the corner where you can get nice and comfy with your favorite book.

As far as coffee selection goes, the vanilla bean latte is one of the best things on their menu. And did I mention the waffles? Their mini waffles are simply to die for. Everything is fresh and made in house, including their almond and cashew milk which is pressed and made there.

Palate: A Coffee Bar

I don’t know about you, but I find that a big problem with many coffee shops is that they don’t open early enough. Not the case with Palate. They open at 6:00 am, making it the perfect place for early birds on their way to work or after their morning workout.

The shop has a wonderfully rustic feel to it with wooden floors and ceilings in addition to a large fireplace. It simply feels like you are steeping into a cozy mountain cottage. Warm inside in the winter with outdoor seating available in the warmer months.

All of their coffee is made with Coava beans which are some of the highest scoring coffees in the world. Here you can also find delicious chai, matcha, and even kombucha. If you like to add a little spice to your coffee, you have to try their cardamom latte made with house steeped cardamom syrup.

Crow’s Feet Commons

Here in the city of Bend, coffee shops aren’t always just that; as we have seen from Spoken Moto and other similar shops, there are many locations in Bend that serve more than one purpose, particularly when it comes to the outdoors and coffee.

Crow’s Feet Commons – located in the old Goodwille-Allen Rademacher house – has created the perfect marriage between an outdoor supply store and coffee shop. Here you will find all the equipment you need for skiing and biking for sale or rental.

Of course, since Crow’s Feet Commons is on this list, you will also find great coffee here at their coffee bar, each drink made with local Portland-based Stumptown beans. Not in the mood for coffee? Grab a locally blended chai, herbal tea, kombucha, or chipotle spiced hot cocoa before you decide to hit the trails and slopes.

Wild Roots Coffee House

“Honest. Wholesome. Quality.” These are the key features you will find in both your service and the products offered at Wild Roots Coffee House. Owners Kris and Laura have created the ideal small-town coffee shop, complete with friendly faces and a minimalistic, hip environment.

The menu doesn’t really offer anything fancy; you can find the basics like lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos, but not much in the way of specialty drinks. However, you don’t need anything fancy if the coffee itself is good, and it is!

Wild Roots keeps everything local. You will find their coffees made with Stumptown beans and a selection of baked goods from local bakeries like Too Sweet Cakes. They also have several customization options like flavored syrups – try cardamom or ask for the seasonal flavor – and non-dairy milk options, including hemp which comes highly recommended.

Companion Coffeehouse

Sci-Fi fans rejoice; Companion Coffeehouse – as well as their origin, the Bad Wolf Bakery & Bistro – pay homage to the infamous Doctor Who in both of their names. For those who may not be Doctor Who fans, you will still enjoy your visit with a great cup of Megaphone coffee, a pleasant atmosphere, and delicious food from some of the local bakeries and cafes.

As an extension of Bad Wolf Bakery, all of the sweets and goodies found at Companion are sourced from there. However, the bread and bagels are baked by Sparrow Bakery, so you know their breakfast sandwiches will also be scrumptious.

There is plenty of seating in the airy, minimalist-style dining area. Feel free to bring your laptop to catch up on some work or plan a study session with some friends. Stay for lunch or a brain drink to refuel before getting back to your day.

While in Bend, you will also want to be sure to check out the Bad Wolf Bakery itself where you will find all day brunch seven days a week. With sweet and savory choices made from scratch every day and a full bar where you can get a giant Bloody Mary or a custom mimosa, you are sure to leave with a smile on your face.

Bom Dia Coffee Lounge

It started as a simple coffee cart in 2008 and quickly became a huge success. Within a year, Bom Dia opened a permanent location in the Westside of Bend and has been serving happy customers since.

Deriving its name from Portuguese – Bom Dia meaning “good day” – founder Beau and his family run their coffee shop with the promise that you will be greeted with a smile and a great cup of coffee to make your daily truly great.

Everything is local and fresh. The coffee is made with locally roasted beans and hand-crafted; they even have an in-house brewed chai. Their pastries and baked goods are provided by Fearless baking and are made daily.

Bom Dia is also known for their unique flavors, like bee pollen, lavender, and rosemary mint, and their cozy, homely interior. They have a way of making every customer feel like family, whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth.

Kanona Cafe

“Superfoods” seem to be a rising trend with more and more cafes opening who offer healthy, high quality foods in exotic and familiar flavors. Kanona Café is Bend’s own superfood café, offering “a little taste of paradise” and lots of espresso.

Their food flavors are inspired by the tropics with a little bit of the Northwest mixed in. From Acai bowls blended with fresh fruits and topped with a variety of nuts, seeds, and granola to their coffees made with Coava beans, everything you try here will taste fresh and give you the boost you need for your day.

At Kanona, superfood flavors aren’t just limited to their smoothies and bowls; you can also find lattes that feature some of these fresh flavors. Not only do they taste good but they are also beautiful. Just check out their gorgeously pink beetroot latte!

During the summer, they also offer Hawaiian shave ice at their Dakine shack on site. What better way to cool off and refresh yourself after a long summer hike?

Bend Mountain Coffee

What Bend Mountain Coffee lacks in space it makes up for with atmosphere and taste. This is a great place to stop if you want to sample the local tastes of Bend.

Their entire menu is provided by local businesses. You’ve got Strictly Organic Coffee, Big O Bagels, My Chai, and Top Leaf Mate. They also don’t want to overwhelm you with choices, so their bagels, paninis, and wraps are made to order.

Here the food is decently priced and the coffee is cheap. The minimal and sleek interior is ideal for a bagel while you check your Instagram feed or a cup of something hot to warm up after a day of downtown shopping.

Be sure to check their hours if you’re not familiar with their shop. They are open until 4:00 pm on weekdays, but close at noon on Saturdays and are closed all day on Sundays.

Bellatazza

A local Bend company since 2003, Bellatazza is all about community and support. They keep everything local, roasting their own coffee and buying their milk, chai, chocolate, and baked goods exclusively from other Bend companies.

They are very selective of the beans they choose to buy for their custom roasted coffees, which are available for wholesale on their website or at their store. And with every cup of coffee you buy, you are helping to support children “adopted” by the owners at Bellatazza through their Plantation Direct buying in Guatemala.

Their style can be described with a few keywords: “honest, sustainable, worldly, fresh, local, social, creative, [and] community minded.” Upon entering the shop, you will be greeted with a friendly smile and served with a delicious breakfast and a hot cup of coffee roasted to perfection.

Riff Cold Brewed Coffee

What’s so special about cold brewed coffee that Riff has devoted its entire business to it? Well, cold brewed coffee is coffee brewed with cold water (duh, right?). It takes much longer than brewing with hot water, but the result is a smoother, sweeter taste, and Riff has the process and recipe down pact.

First and foremost, Riff is a company rather than a specific café, meaning their cold brewed coffees are bottled, boxed, and kegged for consumption at home or at the office. However, they do have a newly opened taproom located in the Box Factory in Bend where you can try their coffees fresh and in person.

Here you can find their cold brewed coffees on tap as well as a selection of Mains, Desserts, Snacks, and Starters. The Southpaw cold brew comes highly recommended with bits of cocoa and nougat inside. You can also find a selection of beers and vegetarian/vegan food options. It’s definitely a fun place unlike any other.

Bluebird Coffee Co.

Vintage and coffee go so well together; there’s just something about the smell and taste of a good cup of joe that evokes nostalgia and transports you to another time. At Bluebird Coffee Co., you have the perfect combination of both.

Their menu offers several unique flavors. From the Bee Sting – a latte flavored with honey and spiced with cayenne – to Autumn in a Cup, which features a twist of pumpkin and other spices, you are sure to find something that tickles your taste buds.

While you are waiting for your order, you can browse their little shop of unique art and trinkets. Everything has a bit of an antique feel to it (similar to a Cracker Barrel) with just a hint of whimsy. They even have a selection of vintage glasses and housewares.

The dining atmosphere feels homey yet quirky with mismatched furniture, and large windows give it a light and airy feel unlike other coffee shops that can seem a bit dark and closed in.

Jackson’s Corner

More than a coffee shop, Jackson’s Corner offers a complete menu of local, humane, and organic foods and coffee. They currently have two store locations, one in the Eastside on NE Cushing Drive which opened in 2014, and the other opened in 2016 on NW Delaware Avenue in the Westside of Bend.

Jackson’s Corner is completely transparent and honest, giving you a complete list of the farms they work with so you know where your food is coming from. They keep everything local and partner with local businesses like Sparrow Bakery and Thump Coffee to name a couple.

Their entire menu is fresh, and they are able to accommodate for food allergies and dietary restrictions such as dairy-free, gluten-free, vegetarian/vegan, and Paleo. Of course, we can’t forget to mention the coffee. Try one of their seasonal latte flavors or get your buzz on with the Boozy Irish Cream Latte.

Townshend’s Tea Company

For some reason beyond my comprehension, some people just don’t like coffee. I call them crazy, but to each his own I suppose. Seriously though, if coffee isn’t your thing or you’re simply just in the mood for a good selection of tea, you have to look up Townshend’s the next time you’re in Bend.

While most coffee shops do offer tea, don’t go into Townshend’s with your tea loving friend expecting to find a cup of coffee. They are tea only, but their selection is phenomenal. They are also happy to answer any questions you may have about tea in person or over the phone, and they are always ready to give a recommendation if you don’t know what you want.

Located next to the Great Harvest Bakery, you can grab a cup of tea and stop next door for a goodie to go along with it.

Tumalo Coffeehouse

Located in the heart of the countryside in Tumalo, this coffeehouse offers a great selection of coffees, sandwiches, and cookies. Not only is the scenery nice but this shop is located right off of one of Oregon’s Scenic Bikeway routes, so it’s convenient for you to stop in for some fuel before or after your ride.

Inside you will find artwork pieces by local artists as well as some handmade and/or fair trade goods for sale. From unique jewelry made from recycled bike parts to lotions and alpaca knitting yarn, there is always something new to find on every visit.

The coffee is always hot and rich and the baked goods are always delicious. They even prepare some of their sweets for the masses. You can expect full pies for sale around Thanksgiving and you can even book them to cater your next event.

Sisters Coffee Co.

In 1989, Winfield and Joy Durham converted an old cabin into a little coffee shop that became well-known in Sisters, Oregon for its fresh roasted coffee and rustic charm. It started with Winfield roasting and running register while Joy baked everything in house.

Since then, they have grown tremendously and now have two locations – The Pearl, which just reopened after a few months of remodeling, and Hood Avenue, where it all began. They have also started roasting and wholesaling their beans which can be found online.

The Pearl location offers toast topped with a variety of spreads, fresh mixed green salads, and breakfast sandwiches. At the Hood Avenue location, you can find a bit more variety and heartier meals such as the Hoodoo Hash Burrito with potatoes, cheddar, bacon, and fresh vegetables with sour cream.

No matter which location you end up at, you can expect a comfy, cabin-inspired environment where you can relax no matter how long you decide to stay.

Suttle Tea

Also located in Sisters, Oregon, Suttle Tea is their first tea café. All of their teas are blended by hand by a local, artisanal tea company using only the best ingredients from small-production farmers.

Every drink is steeped to perfection, with the leaves weighed, temperature regulated, and timer set every time. At their café on E Cascade Ave, you can find hot and iced tea drinks, bubble tea, and pour-over coffee. They also have light food far available with crepes, bagels, and pastries.

Both online and in store, you can find loose-leaf tea, mate, rooibos, and matcha varieties to enjoy at home or on the go. They even sell all the equipment you may need to create the perfect cup of tea on your own.

For a seasonal treat, the pumpkin chai latte comes highly recommended. You can also find several decaf options on their menu so you can relax after work without worrying about staying up all night.

The Cottonwood Cafe

What used to be Jen’s Garden is under new ownership as of March 2018 and now known as The Cottonwood Café. For those who may be Sisters locals, fear not; they still feel very much the same with their affordable meals and casual atmosphere.

All of their dishes are created with local, healthy ingredients creating a plate that is not only pleasing to the palate but also to the eye. Here you can also find Sisters Bakery delicious bread included with some of their meals.

This isn’t necessarily a coffee shop as they don’t have any espresso drinks, but the brewed coffee is strong and bottomless, always served with fresh cream. It pairs perfectly with just about every breakfast option on the menu.

Brewed Awakenings Coffee Roasters

Brewed Awakenings opened their doors in 1989 when coffee houses and drive-thru’s were just starting to emerge. From the beginning, they have been committed to create and serve the best quality coffee and pastries available.

They have developed numerous unique roasts over the years using their Probate Roaster as well as their own pastry recipes which are still made daily in house with fresh, high quality ingredients.

The coffee menu here is larger than you will find many other places with both hot and iced drinks made with espresso, chocolate, cream, and even Kahlua. You can even get hand-dipped cones or shakes in a variety of flavors, including Black Forest and Espresso Mocha Mint Chip.

They currently have seven locations open across the Pacific Northwest, from the Vancouver/Portland area to Bend, Oregon.

Proust Coffee

If you can’t make it to Bend but still want to try some of the local flavor like Lone Pine coffee and Metolius teas, you will want to stop in Proust Coffee located in Redmond, Oregon.

Some of their selection changes weekly including their Single Origin Espresso and Decaf options, so you will want to stop in a few times to see what they have available. Their cold brews are also only available seasonally (Spring and Summer).

However, you can also count on the Heartwood blend house espresso and Tin Pan Alley blend house coffees being available on a daily basis. Try one of their house made syrups, including cardamom, and check to see what’s in season. You may find Earl Grey, lavender, peppermint, or ginger turmeric depending on the time of year you visit.

Green Plow Coffee Roasters

Another great coffee shop in Redmond is Green Plow, which is also known as “Redmond’s living room” to locals thanks to its warm, inviting environment and family-friendly dining area. Not only will you find ample seating but there is also a section with children’s books and toys to entertains your little one’s while you catch up with a friend or read a chapter of your own book.

Their coffee is roasted in house and sold by the bag at their store locations. All of their pastries are baked on site as well; you have GOT to try the almond raspberry Bavarian croissant! Unique seasonal syrups and drinks can also be found here like the spicy maple mocha and lavender mocha.

Green Plow is also an avid supporter of the local people. You will always find a steady rotation of music and pieces by local artists. They also support community events on occasion.
